As a Jewish woman living in New York City surrounded by religious, Jewish communities I often feel pressured - and notice many women in my surroundings feel just the same or even more. There is this certain stigma of suppressing yourself - dressing modest, not showing too much skin, and sexuality is something we just don’t really speak about out loud. I have noticed our body is not some flowing, free part of ourselves but rather something we must hide until marriage and even after. Our body is something we do not feel free in. We should be able to dress how we want, feel how we want, and use our body in any way we want. I don’t believe we should suppress our sexuality and our bodies to conform with a community’s standards. I find myself struggling with the idea of remaining in a Jewish community - yet as a young artist wanting to experiment and do as I wish with my own body and go beyond limitations. I want to use my own body to create art and do as I wish with it. Interaction & Confrontation consists of imagery of a model’s body showing her free and flowing and comfortable with her body, juxtaposed with religious, Jewish symbols. I want to show this intense strong contrast of these two juxtapositions and show how they can be somewhat combined rather than being separate.
